Dalam dunia kerja kita sering menemui orang yang nampaknya biasa-biasa saja tetapi miliki karir yang bagus. Dilain pihak, ada orang yang cerdas justru tidak terlampau cemerlang karirnya. Mengenai hal tersebut orang beranggapan bahwa itu semua bergantung pada sebagaimana hebat seseorang “me-market-kan” diri sendiri. Seperti halnya suatu produk, sehabat-hebatnya produk kalau kita tidak dapat memarketkan dengan baik akhirnya produk tersebut tidak laku juga. Sedangkan produk yang biasa-biasa saja tetapi marketingnya bagus dapat laku dipasar. So, it is about marketing! Dengan demikian, apabila kita memiliki produk yang bagus yang disertai dengan marketing yang bagus tentunya produk kita akan laris di pasar. Demikian pulakah bagaimana sesorang berkarir? Kapasitas diri dan marketing menjadi kunci? Dalam konteks bagaimana seseorang “laku” di pasar karir, hal tersebut boleh dikatakan benar.

Namun hal tersebut kemudian menimbulkan beberapa pertanyaan. Yang pertama, kalau benar bahwa prestasi kerja bergantung kepada bagaimana seseorang memarketkan dirinya, maka orang dengan kapasitas dan kinerja yang terbaik tidak ada jaminan akan mendapatkan prestasi kerja terbaik pula.
