Mungkin ini adalah malam yang paling mengerikan bagi Wiro Sableng selama dia menginjakkan kaki dalam rimba persilatan Tiongkok. Segala sesuatunya gelap, hitam memekat. Hujan turun dengan lebat, angin bertiup dingin mengeluarkan suara aneh tiada hentinya. Sekali-sekali guntur menggeledek dan di kejauhan terkadang terdengar suara lolongan liar serigala hutan.

Dalam keadaan basah kuyup Wiro berusaha mencari perlindungan. Saat itu dia berada di lereng sebuah bukit gundul, sekitar 100 lie dari tembok besar.

"Hujan gila!" memaki Wiro. Dia lari terus. Dalam kepekatan itu di kejauhan dilihatnya satu bayangan hitam sebuah bangunan. Dia tak dapat memastikan bangunan apa adanya itu, namun Wiro segera menuju ke sana. Sesaat kemudian, bila dia sampai ke tempat tersebut ternyata klenteng yang sudah tidak terpakai lagi, Wiro mendekam di bawah atap klenteng yang miring.

Hawa dingin baginya bukan apa-apa tetapi perut yang kosong keroncongan betul-betul merupakan siksaan.<
