Yan Hui adalah murid kesayangan Confusius yang suka belajar, sifatnya baik. Pada suatu hari ketika Yan Hui sedang bertugas, dia melihat satu toko kain sedang dikerumunin banyak orang. Dia mendekat dan mendapati pembeli dan penjual kain sedang berdebat.

Pembeli berteriak: "3x8 = 23, kenapa kamu bilang 24?"

Yan Hui mendekati pembeli kain dan berkata: "Sobat, 3x8 = 24, tidak usah diperdebatkan lagi".

Pembeli kain tidak senang lalu menunjuk hidung Yan Hui dan berkata: "Siapa minta pendapatmu? Kalaupun mau minta pendapat mesti minta ke Confusius. Benar atau salah Confusius yang berhak mengatakan".

Yan Hui: "Baik, jika Confusius bilang kamu salah, bagaimana?"

Pembeli kain: "Kalau Confusius bilang saya salah, kepalaku aku potong untukmu. Kalau kamu yang salah, bagaimana?"

Yan Hui: "Kalau saya yang salah, jabatanku untukmu".

Keduanya sepakat untuk bertaruh, lalu pergi mencari Confusius. Setelah Confusius tahu duduk persoalannya, Confusius berkata kepada Yan Hui sambil tertawa: "3x8 = 23. Yan Hui, kamu kalah.
